Paranormal Horror Mystery, History and Lore

From the time we are children, we are taught to fear the dark. Thanks to cultural influences like media and religion, we are raised to question what lies beyond. A world of spirits, demons, entities and the odd helpful and possibly friendly ghost or apparition.

From urban legends that won’t die (even if their victims did) to ancient practices, mythology and more. Paranormal mysteries and lore help us understand the subcultures that exist and investigate where some of our deepest, darkest fears and terrors come from. What lies beyond our normal senses, in a plane of existence that science can neither explain nor completely debunk?

Our journalists at Puzzle Box Horror report on a variety of horror and paranormal topics. From haunted houses and artifacts that have influence over their residents and owners, to entities with a reputation for creating fear, chaos and sometimes injury. We’re curating bone chilling history, witchcraft and all things that ‘go bump in the night’.

What is behind the rise in Exorcism rites in the United States? How crazy is it that Dybbuk boxes were a trending gift item on eBay? Puzzle Box Horror is where the really scary stories begin, as we search the world for some of the most interesting and terrifying stories, legends and lore that will keep you up at night.

If you’ve enjoyed our articles, we’d love to hear your comments. We know that our community loves the paranormal and sharing their own personal experiences with the unexplained. We don’t just want to tell our stories; we want to share yours too.

Ghost ship on land

What is a ghost ship exactly? Well, within lore it's a ship that is considered to be haunted by a ghost crew, which brings it into the realm of the paranormal, but really what it is when talking in mixed company that might not all enjoy the odd theory of the paranormal or supernatural occurrences within their safe, normal world, it's actually just a vessel with no living crew … [Read more...] about Ghost Ships and the Haunted Maritime World

Telling ghost stories around the bonfire

Within the paranormal community, there are always going to be skeptics, but some of those skeptics actually err on the side of disbelievers—this is a good thing, it’s always better to have a healthy level of doubt in order to pursue evidence without any bias. There have been numerous theories to explain the paranormal phenomena that affect certain people, including but not … [Read more...] about Ghost Stories Thrive in a World of Skepticism

Snow covered graveyard

While attending college in the Interior of Alaska, at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, I was pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Yup’ik—a Central Alaska Native language—on Halloween of my second year, my professor deemed it appropriate to tell us Alaska Native ghost stories. Hearing these stories in Yup’ik gave unique perspective on the particular experience of growing up in … [Read more...] about Ghost Tales of the Arctic: Don’t Take What Belongs to the Dead

Haunted Boardwalk

One Halloween night, as the sun slipped beneath the horizon, the young children were coming back from their rounds through the little Yup'ik village on the tundra in Southwest Alaska. The teenagers had waited their turn and eagerly squeezed out of their home, as their mother told them they were allowed to leave. They raced through to each of the small houses that dotted the … [Read more...] about Ghost Tales of the Arctic: The Frozen Spectre

Red skull wall

Like many other folktales of the arctic region, Yup’ik folklore emphasized keeping children safe from the elements and the dangers of being alone and ill-prepared. This folktale is no different, but it definitely gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it over an early-winter bonfire. A very long time ago, in the Cape Prince of Wales, in a village off the shore, there … [Read more...] about Ghost Tales of the Arctic: The Red Skeleton
